The Home Office has this week (13 November) revealed that Police and crime commissioners (PCCs) are to be abolished in England and Wales, with their roles to be absorbed by regional mayors “wherever possible”.

In areas not covered by a mayor, the role will be taken on by elected council leaders.

There are 37 elected commissioners under the current system, introduced 12 years ago to improve police accountability.

However, the Home Office described the system as a “failed experiment”, noting that two in five people are “unaware PCCs even exist”.

The transition to the new model will happen at the end of the next electoral cycle in 2028.

The Home Office revealed that the upcoming Police Reform White Paper will set out further powers to improve standards, while restoring local neighbourhood policing.

The unique circumstances of devolved local government arrangements in Wales will be taken into consideration. The government will ensure there is continuity of the support services for victims and witnesses that are currently provided by PCCs.
